I cannot tell you how FUN this photoshoot was! Heather came to me with this idea of a sixties themed photoshoot, and I admit I was a little skeptical on how we would pull it off. I was in the middle of senior portrait season, and was getting into holiday portraits when she brought the idea up, so unfortunately,Heather was going to have to come up with most of her ideas on her own. We met over lunch and talked about some basic ideas for outfits, makeup, jewelry, but we were stumped on a location. This was where Heather blew me away; she transformed the corner of her backyard covered patio into this AMAZING scene so it looked like she was in an old bar. With what limited resources she had, she made it work, and made it work well.
We scavenged up some great outfits in thrift stores and our own closets, had her sister do her hair, and we finished off by doing her makeup. The scene was all there and put together, but I knew that the natural light coming off the patio wasn’t going to set the scene perfectly. We wanted it to look like it was indoors, so I pulled out my old external flash that I use for indoor receptions and weddings and played around with that. The result was far beyond what I had hoped for. I stood up high on a stool and photographed downwards so you could see the whole area she had created. Heather had leaned old wooden boards up in the corner to make it look like a wooden wall, and it made the scene (plaster and 2x4s were the original wall).
After a satisfying group of shots in her backyard, we raced against the sunset to get to my parents’ ranch, where my dad’s 1948 Dodge Truck is parked. Its not running, but it finally moved this summer from its corner it had been left in for 8 years. We pulled out the flash and Heather’s sister, Melissa, helped bounce the light off the reflectors for a few different lighting techniques. The results are amazing. I could go on and on about this photoshoot, but I will leave this here for you to create the story yourself. Enjoy//
